While not a lot of quilt work is happening in blooming poppy land these days, I did finally manage to finish a quilt!
I originally began this quilt several months back as I revisited my What’s For Breakfast Quilt and remembered how very much I enjoyed the process as well as the outcome.
As with all improv quilts I make, I so enjoy the creative freedom to design. Using my design wall, I am able to manipulate blocks, strips, chunks, etc. over and over until I find a layout that suits my eye.
For me it is really liberating and relaxing. I must admit, however, there are many moments of intensity with figuring out how to fill in and connect certain sections to pull it all together. That is the other side that forces me to get all “left-brain”! I embrace it however, as a necessary element in this design process.
As some of you know, I am quite a sucker for neutrals and lots of negative space in my quilts. Therefore, my scrap bin of neutrals/linen often begins to overflow. One of my favorite ways to use all those subtle tones of whites, off whites, greys, tans, etc., is to begin peicing them together. No measuring required!!! I love it!
For this quilt, I decided to add a very specific color palette to my neutrals and decided to go with some of my favorite lines/designers. I would say, the front is a pretty equal mix of Lotta Jansdotter’s Bella and Denyse Schmidt’s Flea Market Fancy. I used only those prints that fit my blue/green/ gray palette though. I also added some of my favorite Mingle Dots and the colored solids are all Konas.
I love creating these concentric circles, a technique you can read about in my tutorial here. It is time intensive but I always love the results and end up feeling glad I stuck with it.
I decided to go with random neutrals and only Lotta on the back- I love those trees, along with a nice hearty chunk of linen.
Sing It Out Loud is about a 57″ square, and was entered into the improvisation category in the Quilt Con Quilt Show on Friday night at exactly 2 minutes before the deadline! I’m still waiting till the last minute, that much is the same since college!
As I took this last photo in the setting shade of the late fall sun (thanks to dear hubby for holding it), I realize how grateful I am to have found this love for fabric and the art of quilting. I’m so happy with how this quilt turned out! Thanks for reading!

so totally gorgeous!!!! I love absolutely everything about this quilt, it’s fantastic !!!!
Absolutely beautiful! Would love to have this in my home.
Oh my gosh Karen ~ I wasn’t real crazy about this quilt when I looked at the first picture . . .BUT, as I scrolled down, read your posts, and saw the incredible amount of work, detail, work, creativity, work, concentric circles, work, colors, work, trees, work, dots, work I was amazed at how incredible it truly is. I can’t imagine the perserverence it takes to create a piece of art like this but you have an incredible talent and this quilt displays it in so many ways. I have missed not commenting on your posts recently but please be assured I read each one you post. I’m confident you can remember back to your teaching days how wild things are from about mid-November through the New Year. I’m confident I’ll read your post about this beautiful piece of art winning an award in the contest it was entered in to.
Thanks for such beauty! Happy December 6th if I don’t get a chance to post again!!!!
Oh Eileen, how could I forget those days in the teaching world! thanks so much for scrolling down to discover what you like about this quilt-Ha! I know this style of quilt is not for everyone, so I’m glad you have such confidence in it’s award winning capabilities…. even if you’re a bit biased!! 🙂 Happy holidays!!
With each posting and each quilt, I’m more excited and proud of my amazing daughter. Where did this incredible talent and creativity come from??? You’re a winner all around. xoxo
Another winner Karen! I love the back too!
We missed you at guild on Tuesday….
Wishing you and your beautiful family a wonderful holiday!

I love it! I like that it is random & not “matchy-matchy” & most of all I am jealous & in awe of the work I KNOW it took to quilt circles. Time consuming doesn’t begin to express how long that must have taken. Can I borrow some of your patience? Can’t wait to see more of your beautiful art!
It is just lovely. So serene and peaceful. I just love it; front and back.
You have created a wonderful work of art. Magnificent!
I LOVE this quilt – completely deserves to be hanging at QuiltCon next year.
wow, wow, WOW! your work is astounding!
Oh me! Oh my! The quilting is amazing, Karen! Congrats on getting it done in time for the deadline!
It’s absolutely stunning! Congratulations on getting it entered in Quiltcon on time!
